Yes, I think (actually, I know) the difference is important enough to make the change.
As usual, not all techniques can be applied in all circumstances – but it is good to have a good default technique.

That’s how I started playing “bass”. In this case, don’t do the thumb drop. It becomes more important when you play the longer strings an octave lower on a proper bass.

I have a guitar here and play with the four lowest strings (like you said not gravity wise), I play bass with it since I don’t own a bass yet.

I figured that the thumb dropping is more difficult because it’s less space between the strings, should I skip it or something?

You’re welcome. Coming from guitar, I also played the bass with a pick for the first few years.
Lots of great recordings have basses played with picks – whatever suits the music.

Although there are a few different systems used for categorizing instruments, I’ve never heard the bass being called a percussion instrument. Usually it’s considered a string instrument/chordophone.
Perhaps you mean that it’s part of the rhythm section?

Bass and drums are …
Bass and drums are the foundation to any band. They are the backbone to music. You prbably listen to alot of loud agrresive music. You can’t really notice it but if it was taken out the music would sound hollow. Bass gives you a fuller sound. Listen to old R&B to see how important the bass is.
